AJ’s Story
A.J. rose steadily and quickly in the leadership roles of the UAW Local 600. From 1998 -2000 Freer, was a Bargaining Representative at Brownstown, PRC. He then went on to be a District and Bargaining Representative for Maintenance, Construction and Transportation Unit from 2006-2010. From 2008-2010 he proudly served as a UAW Local 600 Guide and then a Staff Member. A.J. faced the onset of the automotive industry financial crisis head on in 2008 to 2010. His strong leadership skills, perseverance, and determination proved him to be a valuable asset, during one of the most troubled times in our automotive history.
As an effective organizer, and a strong public speaker, A.J. was nominated and elected in absentia for Presidency to lead the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA). The LCLAA vision of creating an environment of social, economic and political empowerment for Latino working families, inspired A.J., to be a part of making the communities in our great nation stronger. In 2014 Freer, won the race and became the new President for LCLAA. A.J. has also been a longtime community activist for Michigan United. Freer supports and is a champion for many great causes in the community, including but not limited to; Camp Liberty, Disabled American Veterans, and Big Brother Big Sister of Metropolitan Detroit.
A.J. ‘s firm knowledge, understanding and experience with the United Automobile Workers, inspired him to take on an executive leadership role to achieve his passions for pursuit of civil and human rights to seek greater social and economic justice to protect and expand the union’s membership. In 2011, A.J. Freer, was elected 2nd Vice President of the UAW Local 600.
Freer resides in the Detroit Metro Area, where he and his wife are raising his two sons. Some of his other interest and hobbies include; Playing the guitar, writing music, reading, photography and spending time with his friends and family.
